An American Plague

I am reading a book called " An American Plague The True and Terrifying Story of the Yellow Fever Epidemic of1793." In this book I learned so mant things. One thing I learned is that Philadelphia itself had an increasing number of cats that were dropping dead every day, attracting, one Phledelphian complain, An amazing number of flies and other insects including mosquitos were everywhere, though their high-pitched whirring was particularly loud near rain barrels, gutters, and open sewers.

Hmmm, what was causing the3 cats to drop deads? Do cats and humans get yellow fever? Any other animals?
